WGSS Humanitarian & GLC Club
The WGSS Humanitarian & GLC Club is a group of Walnut Grove students who wish to promote human welfare and make a difference in this world. We meet at lunch every Thursday in my room (182). Newcomers are always welcome!
What we do
Humanitarian Trip: We are planning a trip to Guatemala Spring Break 2018; we will take part in sustainable development and water security activities.
Grade 8 Leadership Conference: Every February Professional Development day, student leaders invite grade 8 delegates, and prepare and execute leadership teaching sessions and spirited entertainment
Fraser Valley Gleaners: A program where we chop vegetables to make soup stock packages that are sent to poverty-stricken countries.
WGSS Spirit Days: We organize "WGSS Spirit" days to encourage students and staff to show their school spirit!
KIVA: A micro financing program for people in third world countries to use for business start up.
Langley Gardens: A care home for the elderly that we visit after school, two Mondays of each month.
Operation Smile: We donate money to help children with cleft palettes have money for operations so they can function well.
Remembrance Day assemblies: We organize "WGSS Remembrance Day" assemblies to encourage students and staff to reflect on our Canadian freedom.
Langley Vineyard: A community meal we set up and serve the first Wednesday every month.
Bake sales & Fund raisers: We sell cookies and chocolates to the school and donate the money to different charities.
Kindler Society: An society devoted to collecting gently used English language books that are shipped to many countries.
Variety Children's Charity: We sell the Variety Hearts and support B.C. Children who need expensive operations.
Warm Hands, Warm Hearts: A charity initiative that accepts gently used scarves, mittens, and such for people with lower-incomes - see Ms. Sparks for more information.
Muscular Dystrophy: We donate money to help cure and support people who have muscular dystrophy.
WORKCORE: We go to East Vancouver and help clean houses.
